IGSS uses competency-based learning. The IGSS competencies are designed to highlight the core aspects of what students have accomplished. Each student applies for competencies of their choosing throughout the semester, and they defend each application with specific evidence from their work. Teachers then determine whether students have achieved the competency. Our students’ work with competencies helps them identify what pre-established learning targets they have mastered, improves transparency and clarity for the academic and durable skills achieved, gives students control of their learning, and ultimately facilitates students’ understanding of themselves as learners.
